Management Team
Thomas C. Shaner, is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and a former Accredited Member (APR) of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
Mr. Shaner's role as the executive director of local, state and national organizations keeps him in contact with his counterparts throughout the U.S. He has served as president or chairman of several associations. Please read his bio for more information.
Jennifer C. Thornton has been employed at JES since 1993 and currently serves as executive director for four associations: Maryland Optometric Association, Building Owners and Managers Association of Baltimore, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Human Resources Association. Her role with the client is tailored to the specific needs of each group, which is a benefit of the personal attention received at JES. Overall, she assists the Board of Directors and members in fulfilling the mission of the association through volunteer coordination, guidance in budgeting and board issues, conference and event planning and general administration.
Mrs. Thornton brings to her clients a strong commitment to association management. She is a 1999 graduate of the Institutes for Organization Management, a six-year program designed to increase knowledge in all areas of association management including managing change, volunteer development, staff management and leadership skills. She is a current member of the American Society of Association Executives and a former board member and program chairman of the Maryland Society of Association Executives.
Mrs. Thornton has a bachelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in public relations from Towson University.
Tim McKenna has been employed at JES since 2006, and currently serves as Executive Director for two associations: the Maryland Chapter of the Appraisal Institute and the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys' Association. As Executive Director for the client, his role is to work with the board to achieve their specific goals. He assists the Board of Directors and members with volunteer coordination, education coordination, guidance in budgeting and convention and meeting planning. Mr. McKenna also serves as the Associate Executive Director for the Maryland Chiropractic Association. His responsibilities include coordinating with the education committee chairs, filing for education credits and meeting planning.
Mr. McKenna brings to his clients a strong background in marketing and public relations as well as a commitment to diligent and effective association management. He is currently enrolled in the Institutes for Organization Management, an intensive program to increase knowledge in all areas of association management.
Mr. McKenna holds a bachelor's degree in English.
Kristen Shoemaker has been employed at JES since 2005 and currently serves as the Associate Director for five associations: the American Institute of Floral Designers, the Building Owners and Managers Association of Metropolitan Baltimore, the Chesapeake Human Resources Association, the Maryland Optometric Association and the Maryland Improvement Contractors Association.
Overall, Kristen provides support to the Executive Directors and Board of Directors of each of these associations, specifically with event planning, membership coordinating, and acting as a liaison between the associations and their respective committees, as well as focusing on any special projects within the associations that may arise.
Ms. Shoemaker graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2005 from Anne Arundel Community College with an associate's degree in interdisciplinary studies. She expects to graduate shortly from the University of Baltimore with a bachelor's degree in business administration. She is also enrolled to begin studies in the Institutes for Organization Management, an intensive program to increase knowledge in all areas of association management.
Jenny Smith has been with JES since 2006. She serves as associate director for the Maryland Association of Mortgage Brokers, NAIOP-Maryland Chapter and the Professional Grounds Management Society.
Ms. Smith brings to her clients a strong commitment to association management. She is currently working on her Master's degree at Walden University with a focus in management and marketing. Smith graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in public relations and marketing.
Finance Department
Monica Shaner has worked at JES since 1989. As director of finance for JES and all of its clients, she oversees the preparation of client financial statements, arranges for the investment of excess reserves, and maintains communications with client treasurers. She is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of JES, including the purchase and maintenance of computer equipment, ensuring that all needed systems are in place and working properly, and overall company administration (human resources, insurance, 401K, etc.).
Susan Posluszny has been a JES employee since 1994. Susan's duties include filing, writing account payable checks, personal property tax forms, bank deposits, bank statements reconciliation and lending a hand wherever help is needed. Prior to joining JES, Susan worked for more than 20 years in accounting--performing payroll taxes, processing accounts payable and receivables and processing financial statements.
Communications Department
Erika A. Williams has worked at The Joseph E. Shaner Company as the director of communications since the Fall of 2008. She manages the communication and Web efforts of several clients, including but not limited to the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and NAIOP-Maryland Chapter.
As director, Erika designs, updates and maintains client Web sites, develops newsletters and other marketing materials per the client association's need. She also develops press materials and distributes them to the appropriate audience.
Ms. Williams earned her bachelor's degree from Baylor University with a dual focus in business-journalism and management information systems. She earned her Master's in communication in contemporary culture from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
Molly Baldwin has been employed at JES since 2006 and currently serves as communications assistant. She helps manage client Web sites for the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS), the Maryland Chiropractic Association (MCA), the Maryland Optometric Association (MOA), the Maryland Improvement Contractors Association (MICA), NAIOP-Maryland Chapter, the Chesapeake Human Resources Association (CHRA) and the Maryland Association of Mortgage Brokers (MAMB).
She is also responsible for production of client newsletters for MCA, MOA and the Baltimore City Dental Society (BCDS). She helps manage media relations for AIFD, PGMS, MCA, MOA, NAIOP-MD and MAMB.
Ms. Baldwin earned her bachelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in public relations and a marketing certificate from Towson University.
Legislative Department
Megan Mason worked with The Joseph E. Shaner Company from 2002 to 2004 and then returned as the director of legislative services in January 2008.
Megan's entire career has been spent in non-profit management and she completed her IOM designation in 2009 during the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's summer program at Villanova University. She has experience in many aspects of management, including membership, event planning, public relations, program coordination, international partnerships, and grant research, however, her main focus is government relations. Mrs. Mason is a registered lobbyist with the Maryland General Assembly and has worked closely with legislators and executive officials in the understanding, research and passing of bills and regulations.
She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in journalism and her Master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in government.
Support Staff
Leah Lovelace serves as the Membership Coordinator for the following seven organizations: the Maryland Association of Mortgage Professionals, the Maryland Chiropractic Association, the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys Association, the Maryland Optometric Association, NAIOP Maryland, the Maryland Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, and the Professional Grounds Management Society
Mrs. Lovelace is responsible for client services for all association members, with a primary focus on new memberships, renewals, and member records. Leah earned her bachelor's degree from Clarion University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Mass Media Arts, Journalism & Communication Studies.
Marilyn serves as the registration coordinator, processing meeting registrations for all of JES' clients. As receptionist, she manages over 14 phone lines.
Jessica Case is the membership coordinator for the following four associations: American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), Building Owners and Managers Association of Baltimore, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Human Resources Association (CHRA).
Jessica's duties include communicating with members and volunteers, planning, coordinating and attending client events, database management, invoicing and management of client budget.
Rachel is the mailroom manager for all JES client associations. She oversees the labeling and mailing of brochures, newsletters, correspondence, etc. In addition to that, she also operates the copy machine according to each association's assignment. She is also responsible for inventory of association stationery and miscellaneous office supplies.
